CROSS

Field archive of the world after the Crossing  •  2005-2025

In 2005 something began killing every genetically female person on Earth. By 2007 half the species was gone. The world did not collapse. It adapted. Twenty years later, one woman was pulled across from a world where it never happened.

01 The Event

Half the species, on a timer nobody could stop.

A prion-like environmental agent switched the silenced X chromosome back on. Every XX body keeps one X dormant to survive; two active copies is a lethal overdose. XY bodies had nothing to reactivate, so men lived. It fell along karyotype. The dying took roughly eighteen months.

The agent remains endemic. There is no going back, and the birth rate has been zero for twenty years. Humanity has an expiry date.

02 Twenty years

From the first deaths to the day she arrived.

2005
First unexplained female deaths begin. Nobody connects them yet.
2006
The agent is identified as chromosomal and XX-fatal. Markets seize. Healthcare buckles under workforce loss and patient load at once.
2007
The last women die. The population is effectively halved. The world is all-male and terminal.
2008-2010
A financial crisis kills long-term credit. The Quiet Years: cities empty, the State retreats from the edges, cults and the Market fill the vacuum.
2015
The Archive Wars, fought over pre-Event media and genetic data.
2020
A pandemic thins the irreplaceable old experts further.
2025
She arrives. Six men wake Attuned.
03 2025 // the world now

The healthiest the planet has ever been, and the most doomed.

The grid still runs in the city cores. Rations still get issued. Trains roughly keep time. But it is brittle: infrastructure built for eight billion is maintained by a falling four billion, and nobody invests in a future with no next generation. Things work until they don't, then come back patched.

Meanwhile the natural world is thriving. The air is cleaner than any living man remembers, reefs are recovering, and the emptied outer suburbs are half-reclaimed by bush, with raptors nesting in dead office towers.

No future, no present value

With no next generation, men split into two kinds.

Extractors

Take it now

Strip the world while it lasts. The future is worth nothing, so spend the present.

Preservers

Keep the lights on

Maintain a dying machine out of grief, not hope. Someone has to.

04 Memory of women

A man's whole relationship to her is set by his age.

No one alive is under twenty. What a man feels about a woman depends entirely on whether he ever knew one.

20-22No memory
Born after the Event. A woman is an abstraction. They ache for her less, because they never knew her, and cannot imagine being born from a person.
22-25Fragments
Faint scraps only. A mother's touch, a voice. Nothing they can hold.
30-40Bitter
Teens at the Event. Old enough to have wanted women, too young to ever have had the chance. The bitter cohort.
40+Widowers
Likely had a wife or partner. They grieve a specific person, in a culture with no grief rituals left, because grief at that scale broke ritual.
05 The Mirror Experiment

They reached for another timeline. They got her instead.

The Continuity Authority's dimensional program tried to reach a parallel world where the Crossing never happened, to pull back genetic material for a cure. The device needs a counterweight: mass for mass, person for person.

When it fired it grabbed the nearest body in the field, the researcher Rafael, and swapped him for a woman from our world. The State logged it a failure: a dead researcher, no sample, fried gear. They buried it. They don't know it worked.

RAFAEL --> out
THE SUBJECT <-- in
Materialised at the nearest stable node in Nick Morgan's outer suburb.

She is not a cure. Reversing it means rebuilding the apparatus, which means walking back into the people hunting her.

06 The Mark // the Attuned
Ring strength: 14%

A compass made of bodies.

Every surviving man carries a faint pale ring inside the pupil, the agent's harmless trace, so ordinary nobody notices it. Near her, any man's ring briefly blooms, a warm flicker that fades when she leaves.

But six men woke the instant she arrived with a permanent ring that strengthens the closer she gets, checkable only in a reflection. These are the Attuned. Five of them hunt her. One does not.

The only man who can read the trail she left. Chasing it as grief for Rafael, not knowing he caused the swap that took his own lover.

08 The terrain

Five answers to the end of the world.

Every faction wants her for a different reason. Select an emblem to open its file.

09 The engine

Word of her spreads in a fixed order.

Nick has known since the start, because he found her. Then it leaks, each discovery accelerating the next. Every rescue is just a transfer between cages.

First
Tag
Reads the dimensional signature she left when she crossed.
Second
Dulce
Discovers his brother Rafael was swapped out for her. It breaks his mind.
Third
Glynn
Notices his follower Dulce acting strangely, and investigates.
Fourth
Albert
Glynn's people sniff his networks. Confirmed when Nick comes asking for help.
Last
Jaime
His Reformer network flags that everyone is asking questions at once.

Origin // Nick Morgan - first to find her, hides her. The only true way out is the Rift home.

10 Assessment

She is not hope for the species.

She is a reopened wound in a world that finally stopped bleeding, and why everyone will tear it open again to get to her.
